Give me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My script of joy, immortal diet,
M
y bottle of salvation.
My gown of glory, hopes true gauge,
And thus I'll take my pilgrimage.

~Sir Walter Raleigh

A hiker, walking for pleasure, likes to choose between several alluring trails.
The pilgrim desires only the road that leads home.

Real Christianity consists in

Purity,

Justice,

Contentment,

Self-command,

Philanthropy,

and a Faith which produces a sublime disregard

of human events.

~Thomas Dudley Fosbrooke,

Vicar of Walford, 1843

"... a sublime disregard of human events."

A noble thought for the day from the good Vicar!

Days Of Lead

Lead: heavy to lift, lack-luster, darkish.

The feet are leaden. The days and nights as well. The spirit doesn't soar too high.

Blessings are noted. Truly.
These, the prayers of others,
the thoughtful and loving ministrations of daughters,of grand daughters.
The garden's beauty just now also fills the dark hollow places of the soul.

Looking, thinking about this lead, this word, made me realize it is just like another English word with a different pronunciation and very different meaning. And in that word there is hope.

Another penned the words long ago but they are also scribbed on my heart.

All the way my Savior lead(s) me,
What have I to ask besides?
Can I doubt His tender mercies
Who through life has been my guide?
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell,
For I know whate'er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.

I am comforted.

Rejoicing with those that do rejoice!!

Our beloved sailor is home from the sea.

All glory to God and praises loud resound!
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take,
The clouds you so much dread
are big with mercy and shall break
in blessings on your head.
~Wm. Cowper

Just the word 'oncologist' strikes terror. I hate to admit it, but there it is. How humbled once again by the Mercy that breaks in blessing. How could we have even imagined, that once again our great God would place in our pathway one of His choice servants 'for such a time as this'?

On noting the 'pastor' on the occupation line of the medical form, this dear man began to address all things from that blessed eternal perspective that only God's children understand.

Item by item he addressed our fears and answered our questions before we spoke of them.

Still, the fact is that tomorrow a kidney surrounded by a cancerous mass will be removed.

The fact remains that this is serious surgery with a long recovery time.
Admittedly, there is an element of dread here too.
We're speaking of a most impatient patient!

Yet, today while I won't say there is a lightness of bouncing spirit within, there is certainly a complete peace. Too, the spirit within is greatly humbled by New Mercies strewn on today's pathway.

My only puzzlement is the glaring fact of my own doubt. How could I have imagined such abundant grace given? And why did I not expect it from the Hand that gives only good things?

Look closely, Dear Reader - on my forehead is imprinted this day: "O ye of little faith".

With heart-felt thanks to all of you for your continued prayers as our journey continues.

And now, Lord,
what is my hope?
truly my hope is even in Thee.

O send out Thy light and Thy truth,
that they may lead me and bring me to Thy holy hill and to Thy dwelling, and that I may go unto the alter of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness;

Why art thou so heavy, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?
O put thy trust in God;
for I will yet give Him thanks,
which is the help of my countenance,
and my God.

What a kindness, that in centuries past, these words were designated for This Day in the Book of Common Prayer's Psalter reading.

We begin a new phase of our journey this day. There is that merciful bend in the road that prevents us from seeing what lies ahead and which at the same time drives us close to the side of our Shepherd.

The heart is indeed 'disquieted within me' and yet I know well the safety that is found in the company of the One who leads, Who knows all our days and all our ways. He charted them in Eternity Past. He is here. He will be with us to journey's end.
He is Sovereign,

He is trustworthy,

He is faithful.

Praise Him.

Heros, Overcomers and Our Amazing Lad

Always, from my earliest days, I've thrilled to stories of valiant warriors. Stories of those determined to overcome impossible odds and not simply to survive but to conquer and achieve, head up, shoulders back. These warrior heroes come in all shapes and forms. Some stand out in history, some are common folk and even family members. All began in the ordinary and commonplace that became extraordinary and challenging by life circumstances.

So here, this day is yet another such tale.

This is the tale of a Lad, one of our own. We were privileged and delighted to watch this Lad of ours graduated from high school recently. I know, this is not all that extraordinary and news worthy, it happens often enough. But our Lad not only graduated, but graduated with honors and # 8 in his class of fifty some students of a public school.

What makes this such a tear producing, heart swelling, extraordinary feat? Our Lad was diagnosed in his early years as having Asberger's Syndrome. And his story could easily have stopped there. He has struggled through his educational years , facing common defeat and uncommon frustrations daily. The list of these is long and overwhelming.

Now, he has dreams. Big dreams, perhaps too big, really. But what 18 year old has not had those dreams of glory and grandeur. For my part, I shall not step on those dreams.

Our Lad has a rock strewn pathway ahead and it will be up hill all the way, that is certain. Yet he has accomplished so very much thus far on his journey, it would be foolish to rule anything out in the future.

We are so very proud of him and his accomplishment. Perhaps it is wise to add that he is also of a gracious, thoughtful and compassionate nature. He has limitations to be sure, but I for one look forward to what he has yet to do in his life.

Blessed with amazingly wise and courageous parents who know their God's faithful ways, we can look forward to future days, heads up, shoulders back.
